OAKLEAF — In 2000, the Board of County Commissioners purchased a 641-acre timberland tract nearby Oakleaf Plantation and Jennings State Forest.
Now, the county government is planning to turn the tract into a park — and what sort of park it will be depends on your survey answers.
Nick Kuhn is a landscape architect and park planner at Kimley-Horn, an engineering and consulting company. Kuhn's team is tasked with helping to turn the community's vision for Veteran's Park to reality.
Kuhn is excited about the park's development, and it's one of the biggest projects Kimley-Horn is handling right now. It's an ecologically rich area, he said, with turkeys and other wild fowl (but no bears he has personally seen, yet).
The plot of land is a mixture of wetlands and unharvested timber trees, which have grown sturdy and valuable since the county purchased the plot of land — $1,000 an acre, Kuhn estimates. Harvesting the timber and using the proceeds to fund the project itself is one of the survey questions.
The survey asks what residents want to see in the park: trails, camping sites, bathrooms, boardwalks, observational areas, play areas and more.
The community is invited to share what it wants out of the park by completing a short survey online. The short survey will be live until late July and can be found at surveymonkey.com/r/ClayCountyVeteransPark.
