GREEN COVE SPRINGS – At Tuesday’s meeting, the Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to maintain the county’s current millage rate during the first reading for the fiscal year 2024-2025.

The ad valorem millage rate intends to support all county-wide operations, other dependent special districts and municipal service taxing units.  The final milage rate must be set before the end of the fiscal year, which falls annually on Sept. 30.

The approved millage rate of each taxing unit is as follows:

• County Services - 5.5471

• Unincorporated Services - 0.1477

• Law Enforcement - 2.4014

• Fire Control - 0.5048

• Lake Asbury - 0

• Challenger Center - 3.0

The first public county budget hearing with these millage rates will be on Sept. 10. 

In other news, a proposed development request to rezone an application for 72.1 acres of residential and agricultural land into a housing development under Goodrich Estates. The change would have encompassed the north and south sides of County Road 315A and the east side of the intersection with CR 315.

Many residents strongly opposed the plan, specifically those living on the surrounding Knowles Road. During public comments, many pleaded with the board to deny the application, citing flooding issues, traffic worries and the need to keep agricultural wetlands in the county.
