St. Johns Country Day School hero George Gilson, who hit the two-run home run that put the Spartans into the Final Four, delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift St. Johns to a 5-4 Class 2A semifinal win against St. Petersburg Northside Christian Monday morning in Ft. Myers.
St. Johns will play Wednesday in its third Class 2A championship game in the past four years.
The Spartans fell behind, 2-1, on a third-inning two-run homer to fall back 2-1, but got back into the game in the seventh after Northside got a two-run triple down the first base line to take the lead.
In the seventh, after relief pitcher Seth Alford became the fifth pitcher for St. Johns coach Tom Lucas. The Spartans got a single from Kyle Boylston and a walk to Kolt Myers to set up Gilson's game-winning blast over the centerfielder's head.
St. Johns now awaits the winner of The First Academy and Miami Christian played later Monday to determine the championship matchup at Lee Health Sports Complex.
