GREEN COVE SPRINGS – When Deputy Charles Smith responded to a house fire on March 10, the home was engulfed in flames. After a man escaped, Smith entered the home and rescued a woman and their two dogs. On Aug. 31, Sgt. Zachary Cox responded to a woman jumping off the Doctors Lake bridge. Cox saw her clinging to a bridge pylon, so he commandeered a boat from the marina and rescued her. Sheriff Michelle Cook presented Smith with the Deputy of the Year Award and Cox with the Sworn Supervisor of the Year Award for their actions.
