Two men killed in separate bicycle accidents

CLAY COUNTY – Two men were killed less than three hours apart when they were hit by vehicles while riding their bikes on Saturday, Jan. 22.
Richard Humphries, 45, of Middleburg, was killed when he was struck by a car on North Mimosa Road about a half-mile south of County Road 218. According to the Highway Patrol, the driver, who is believed to be in a white Chrysler PT Cruiser, drove away.
Humphries died on his way to the hospital.
FHP said the PT Cruiser sustained damage to the right-front fender and hood. Anyone with information about the car or the driver should call *347 on a cellphone or call First Coast Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-8477.
Troopers then got another call about a man being struck while he was riding his bicycle on Old Jennings Road at Long Bay Road. According to the incident report, the 39-year-old victim from Orange Park was riding westbound on Old Jennings Road along the right side of the road when he was hit from behind by a Ford F-250 pickup truck by a man from Middleburg. The victim was declared dead at the scene, while the driver of the truck remained to answer questions. The Florida Highway Patrol doesn’t report names of car accidents.

Man charged with cyberstalking former girlfriend

GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Hunter Alan Christie, 18, of Jacksonville, was charged with stalking and sexually cyber-harassing his ex-girlfriend by logging into and posting explicit photographs of her on her new boyfriend’s social media account,
According to the affidavit for arrest, Christie and the woman dated for nearly 19 months. They broke up in January 2021.
Christie, however, continued to “harass” her by leaving a “gift bag” at her home, putting photos of her on her car and showing up at her job between Nov. 5, 2021, and Dec. 5, 2021, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.

Correction: Darryl Daniels’ trial scheduled for February
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – The trial for former Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels was set for Feb. 21, according to court documents.
The trial will get underway on Feb. 21 and jury selection is scheduled to begin on Feb. 22.
Clay Today erroneously reported the trial was supposed to start on Friday, Jan. 21.
Daniels eventually will face charges he tampered with physical evidence and made three false reports to law enforcement authorities to cover up his extramarital affair with a former co-worker.
Daniels was arrested on Aug. 14, 2020, after he set up a meeting with his former mistress, Cierra Smith, in Oakleaf, then calling the Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies to have her arrested for stalking him, according to the arrest report.
Smith was released without being booked shortly after arriving at the jail. When the Florida Department of Law Enforcement launched an investigation, Daniels was accused of taking his cellphone to his agency and asking information technology agents to destroy any connections he had with Smith, FDLE said.
Daniels was running for re-election at the same time. His arrest came four days before the primary, and he still contends the charges, and the timing of the arrest, was designed to keep him from winning re-election.
Michelle Cook won the primary. Gov. Ron DeSantis quickly suspended Daniels from completing his term and he appointed Cook to take control a month ahead of her inauguration.
