ORANGE PARK – The Art Guild of Orange Park awarded Orange Park High’s Shannah Murphy the $1,000 Courtenay Hunt Scholarship.

Shannah’s art teacher, Carrie Keene, also received a $100 check to use in her classroom.

Runner-up Makayla Kampfer received $500 and second runner-up Lola Lanier received $100. Both are seniors at Oakleaf High and study art under Kezia Laberis.

All three students displayed outstanding art portfolios at the AGOP’s May meeting where each was honored with cake and punch, art supplies and a year’s membership in the Art Guild.

The Art Guild named the scholarship in honor of Orange Park’s prominent local artist, Courtenay Hunt, following his death in 2013. He was a founding member of the Art Guild, and his home and studio were on Doctors Lake in Orange Park. Hunt was recognized as Jacksonville’s portrait artist of choice. In 1967, he was commissioned to paint a portrait of Andrew Jackson which hangs in Jacksonville’s City Hall.

Several of his paintings will be auctioned off to fund this scholarship at the AGOP annual gala, Putting on the Ritz, to be held at the Hilltop Restaurant on Friday, Sept. 22. The event is open to the public. Tickets are available through the Art Guild of Orange Park at artguildoforangepark.org.
