ORANGE PARK – Charges continued to pile up for a Middleburg man already in jail when the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said it used a confidential informant to make several drug purchases on May 1.

Lucas James Lawrence, 37, faces additional charges of trafficking fentanyl and selling methamphetamine to an informant working with the agency.

During the investigation, Lawrence was arrested three other times on drug charges.

On May 16, he was charged with possession of cocaine and trafficking methamphetamine and fentanyl when he was stopped at a doughnut shop on Blanding Boulevard when a CCSO deputy noticed he had white powder on his face under his nose. A search of his car uncovered methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, Buprenorphine, Alprazolam and other unknown pills in a green pouch.

On May 18, he was riding a bicycle along Blanding Boulevard and failed to stop at a stop sign without a rear red reflector or light. He swore at a sheriff’s deputy when he was told to stop. Once he was detained, he was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, possession of fentanyl and resisting law enforcement after deputies found drugs in his pockets.

Then, on May 22, he was charged with smuggling fentanyl into the Clay County Jail on May 20 after another inmate, Kyle Joseph Jacobs overdosed on fentanyl in the jail laundry room.

Based on the totality of his charges, his bond was set at $1,500,024.
