ORANGE PARK - On a bittersweet Saturday, Mackey's Munchies welcomed guests in for one last meal.

With smiles on their faces, Brandye and Chef Brian Mackey greeted and served their customers just like they always had. But sadness still lingered in the air. 

It's because the Mackey's said they have decided to close their beloved restaurant for good. 

The two have been cooking up Cajun-style cuisine for the county for many years. They were located on Fleming Island before moving to their current location at 868 Blanding Blvd. in 2019. 

Brandye said that their closure is mainly due to medical reasons and limited staffing.

She said maintaining the business has been challenging due to those circumstances.

"It's hard for small businesses," Brandye said. "So, if you haven't gone out to eat lately and you've been thinking about a place and you're passing it, stop. Go see them because we need help. Small businesses need some help."

Although they are closing, Brandye said this is not the last you will see of them in the community. Cooking and providing good food has always been their passion, and she said they will continue doing that in whatever capacity they can.

"We might do private parties, or I'm thinking about maybe doing some kind of podcast or something like that," Brandye said. "Because I like to talk. So, pairing food with fashion or something like that." 

She added that there is a possibility that someone will buy the brand in the future, considering that it is still a valuable venture. 

But, overall, she said the two are proud of the impact that they have made and value every single connection throughout the years. They are ready to see what's in store. 

"Thank you to everyone that supported us, that prayed for us, that came and ate with us, that donated for our events," Brandye said. "That even said good things or bad things. Thank you, we appreciate you and keep us in your prayers."
