One of the most important things Christ-Followers can cultivate in their lives are the “Fruits of the Spirit”. Galatians 5:22 says: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (NIV).

Of all the fruits of the Spirit, love is the most remarkable of all. It is a much more profound word than we could ever truly grasp. It is full of power, comfort, and mystery all at the same time. Not only that, but the Bible defines God’s very character by this powerful fruit. 1 John 4:16 says, “We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them” (NLT). Love is so integral to who God is that the Bible goes as far as to say that God is love. (1 John 4:8)

Jesus further demonstrates the incredible influence of love. In Mark chapter 12, Jesus is confronted by the Pharisees who wish to ensnare Him in a trap. They ask Him what the greatest commandment in all God’s Word is. They were hoping to trap Him in an answer that they could use to denounce His credibility among the people. But Jesus didn’t hesitate in His response.

In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus says, “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments’” (NIV).

Take a moment to consider the intense nature of this statement. In those times, the entirety of the Scriptures consisted of the Law and the Prophets. So, Jesus is saying that the whole of God’s Word hangs on love! Of all the teachings in the Bible that God would have us live out, love is by far the most important.

Love is what inspired God to create us. Love is what drove Jesus to the cross to save us. God’s very nature is love, and He has called us to reflect His love throughout the world.
