ST. JOHNS - Middleburg High volleyball got a quick wakeup call to the high stakes of just being Middleburg and playing a schedule designed by 30-plus year coach Carrie Prewitt as the Lady Broncos opened with a scintillating 3-2 loss to unbeaten Creekside High a week ago, then challenged, first, long time state Final Four nemesis Jensen Beach and others of the same caliber at a Tournament of Champions in Tampa.
“Our team is relatively young and the Creekside team came at us with some high caliber play,” said Prewitt, who has announced earlier that this will be her final season as coach for Middleburg with long time assistant and former player Meredith Forkum to take over. “Against Creekside, they showed some tendencies on some of the plays that caught us off guard and maybe, with a few more games under our belt, the kids may have reacted differently and understand the cues of plays that are coming over the net. Experienced eyes would have seen some their scoring moves and better reacted, but overall, one of the best opening games for us.”
Versus Creekside, it was sophomore hitter Connor Rahn who hammered against the Lady Knights powerful front line with massive hits in the final 15-point overtime. Rahn has already amassed 78 kills for the season with Brooke Forkum sitting at 49 for a strong duo at the net for Prewitt. Madelyn Kelley and sophomore Olivia Callipo had strong games against Creekside.
“The hitters will only get better as games continue,” said Prewitt. “I was pleased that they continued to play hard and not back down. This was a very loud environment much like region playoff games. Tampa will be against even higher caliber teams.”
In Tampa, Middleburg opened with unbeaten (10-0, 5A region finalist) Jensen Beach, a 2-0 loss, then hit (8-1) Gainesville for a second 2-0 loss before stretching two wins over West Orange (2-0) and West Boca Raton (2-1). A final day loss, 2-1, to Dr. Phillips of Orlando (6-4) and (6-3) Marvin Ridge (2-0) put the Broncos season record at 2-5 with a home game Thurs., Sept. 8 against powerhouse Spruce Creek (1-1).
At St. Johns Country Day School, coach Traci Livingston, still unbeaten at 5-0, achieved her 500th victory with wins over Clay High and Bishop Snyder getting her the milestone win.
