GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Florida Highway Patrol investigation determined a former Oakleaf girls basketball player was driving 99 mph hours after scoring 12 points in a victory last year when she ran into another car that resulted in the death of a 3-month-old boy.

Kamiya Hope Jones, 19, of Orange Park, was arrested on July 25 and charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving in connection with an accident on Jan. 5, 2023, at the intersection Eagle Landing Parkway and Oakleaf Plantation Parkway.

According to the five-page affidavit for an arrest warrant, Jones was driving a 2020 Honda Civic with a teammate, Jakayla Schriner, as a passenger, while a teammate, Kirshya Jahnya Harge, followed in a 2013 Hyundai Elantra after the Lady Knights defeated Nease 76-54. They stopped at McDonald’s, then they were driving soundbound on Oakleaf Plantation Parkway faster than twice the posted speed limit of 45 mph.

Jones was in the lead car. FHP said Jones was traveling 99 mph and Harge was going 87. As they approached the intersection of Eagle Landing Parkway, Jones struck a Hyundai driven by Simone Elise Huffman on the left. A 3-month-old boy was in a car seat in the back seat. He died the next day of his injuries.

Harge managed to veer away from the crash, but she ran into a concrete light pole. The collision was so severe that it snapped the pole in half.

Her bond was originally set at $300,005 but was reduced to $175,006. Her next court appearance will be on Aug. 19.
