ORANGE PARK – A routine traffic stop for a faulty tag light turned into a short chase, weapons, drug and resisting arrest charges for a Jacksonville man.

A’Qevon Eugene Mercer, 23, was charged with resisting law enforcement with violence, battery on law enforcement, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use or display of a firearm during a felony, knowingly providing a false name to law enforcement and driving with a suspended license after he was stopped in an apartment complex on Aug. 1 on Wells Road.

When the Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy approached the car, he noticed a strong odor of marijuana smoke. He asked the two occupants to stand in front of his car while he searched the car. Mercer attempted to flee, but other deputies quickly detained him by climbing under a truck.

His bond was set at $96,021.
