ORANGE PARK - Former Mandarin High cross country and track star Sem Sultanov, a face familiar to Fleming Island High running races, blasted the Resolution Run 5K with a 15 minutes flat split to open the New Year with speed on the roads.

Sultanov, 23, a University of North Florida runner now, has won a few races prior to Saturday’s Florida Striders event with a recent win at the 1st Place Sports New Years 5K race on January 2.

At the Resolution run, Sultanov broke early from the pack to win by more than 90 seconds over runner Christopher McCaffrey, 34, a Jacksonville stalwart, who finished in 16:34. Neil Chandler, 47, was third at 16:53.

Oakleaf High freshman runner Graham Myers, 14, finished fifth overall with a 17:16 effort.

For the womens, Amelia Williams, 28, also a Jacksonville regular, posted an 18:31 time to take 13th overall and the women’s top prize.

Orange Park’s newest running mom, Belissa Del Valle, 33, posted a 19:41 effort for second female with Paige Poehler, 30, third at 19:52.

Master’s champs were Jeff Provenzano, 46, and Christy Astorga, 40, in 17:21 and 20:42, respectively.

There were 516 finishers. Next race is January 23 at the Green Cove Springs’ Military Museum of North Florida that will be the stage for the HellCat 10K/30K/50K ultradistance runs.

Runners will run a 10K loop around historic Lee Field, home to the US Navy F6F Hellcat fighter jet of World War II. The 50K starts at 7 a.m. with the 30K and 10K off at 8 a.m.
