Coach Kennard likes the Blue Devil look

GREEN COVE SPRINGS - Without returning starter quarterback Merrick Rapoza behind center Cody Mobley due to baseball regionals, Clay High football coach Kyle Kennard got a good look at his young returners from last year’s 3-7 team including backup Landon Chadwich who was efficient for the Blue Devil offense in the team’s Saturday scrimmage at Clay High.

“We got some things to fix, but overall, they looked good, not a lot of penalties and some good adjustments to situations,” said Kennard, who finished 3-7 last year after a playoff berth two years ago. “We’ll be alright. The line looked good, strong and fast, the backs were running hard; Chandler Thomas should be our lead guy and the outside ball guys; Payton Dykas, Antonio Thomas and Vonte Burke are good hands guys downfield. Burke also got a nice interception out there today.”

On the defense, the big presence inside is junior Omar Goosby, who was in the Blue Devil backfield for most of the attack forcing Chadwich to be inventive on his feet.

“He’s a monster,” said Kennard. “We will build around his size up front.”

On the line, led by center Cody Mobley, line coach Jim Reape liked Eli Iscoa and senior John Johnson as incoming strong man. Offensive coach Brian Flaherty is back to construct the Blue Devil attack.

On defense, Craig Nosse and Hunter Hill direct the attack on that side of the ball.
