GREEN COVE SPRINGS – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported Jered Jerome Nichols, 44, who was arrested on Nov. 6 for simple battery and retail theft, died in the Clay County Jail on Nov. 13.

That morning, shortly after 11:30, he was assessed by medical personnel due to appearing ill, not as a result of a use of force incident but with an apparent medical emergency. The efforts of Deputies and medical staff to revive him were unsuccessful.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will review this case, and the Medical Examiner’s Office has also accepted jurisdiction. The family was notified, and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences.
