What is a Disciple?

When Jesus commissioned His followers in Matthew 28:18-20, He called them to "make disciples of all nations." The Greek word for disciple, mathētḗs, means "learner" or "student". Being a disciple of Jesus involves learning from Him and teaching others through our words and actions.

Discipleship is a lifelong journey, a continuous process of growth and transformation. Following Jesus means denying ourselves and taking up our cross daily (Luke 9:23-26), putting aside our desires, and embracing God's will for our lives. This is hard, yes, but God gives us all the strength we need through the Holy Spirit.

Hating sin and pursuing holiness are crucial aspects of discipleship. Romans 1:17 emphasizes that "the righteous will live by faith". Our faith in Jesus and the Gospel shapes how we live, guiding us toward a life of righteousness and away from sin. That’s why we must cling to the truth of the Gospel and immerse ourselves in God’s Word every day. It will shape our very lives!

Teaching and modeling the life of Jesus to others is an essential part of discipleship. We share our faith and help others grow in their relationship with God. This process of teaching and learning is ongoing, filled with moments of wonder and discovery as we deepen our understanding of God's love and purpose.

Embracing a life of faith, learning, and growth brings us closer to Jesus every day and helps others do the same. Committing to this journey reveals the fullness of life He promised.

By committing to this lifelong journey of discipleship, we open ourselves to the transformative power of God's love and wisdom. Our faith grows stronger, and our lives become a testimony to the teachings of Jesus. Through our actions and words, we can inspire others to embark on their own journey of discipleship, creating a ripple effect that extends the reach of God's kingdom.
