• Donald Davidson was sentenced to death for the brutal rape and murder of Roseann Welsh of Middleburg and the kidnapping and rape of her 10-year-old daughter in 2015.

• Oakleaf High junior Keondre Moss was killed when the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said he was racing against two other cars when he lost control on Oakleaf Village Parkway and slammed into a tree.

• Clay County auditor Mike Price warned commissioners their decision not to raise the millage rate and drop a $60 stormwater utility fee will keep taxpayers happy, but it will make it difficult to maintain services.

 10 years ago, 2014

• Seven Clay County football teams united to collect canned goods and non-perishables in a friendly competition for the Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs.

• The Orange Park Town Council voted down a proposal to conduct a traffic study for the oak-lined River Road, which would have included the estimated cost for re-paving and upgrading the road.

• St. Johns County Day School junior Madison Dill surpassed the 1,000 “kill” mark in her career in a victory against Ridgeview.

 20 years ago, 2004

• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested David McCall of Orange Park and charged him with vandalizing spraypainting graffiti on the walls of Clay Electric with the words (Power Nazis.”

• Residents in the cul-de-sac neighborhood in Bear Run use chainsaws to cut free of debris left from Hurricane Francis that rolled through the county on Sept. 5.

• Neighbors and Orange Park residents say goodbye to James Horton, who owned and operated JC Horton’s Garage since 1958 on Kingsley Avenue, after he passed away.

 30 years ago, 1994

• The Clay County School Board voted to increase the millage rate by 2.32% to 9.025.

• The school district announces plans to build Elementary School “K” on an 11-acre tract on Lakeshore Drive East on Fleming Island. The school would later be known as Fleming Island Elementary.

• Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called after Middleburg Baptist Church was burglarized. It was the sixth church to report a burglary in a week.

 40 years ago, 1984

• Three members of the Outlaws motorcycle gang were arrested in connection to a burglary at an Orange Park home.

• The Orange Park Town Council meeting turned into a shouting match when council members accused David Brownell of using Town stationery to solicit funds for the YMCA. Brownell then accused the council of its process for selecting a new police chief.

• The Orange Park Humana Hospital Auxiliary holds a farewell party for Director of Volunteers Barbara Freeman at the Ravines Country Club after she announces she is transferring to Tampa.
