County prepares as new garbage services around the corner

GREEN COVE SPRINGS — Less than a week from the start of the county’s new curbside collection services, Tuesday's Board of County Commissioners meeting provided updates on FCC’s progress — and the company is still facing significant delays.

So far, only 11 of 31 pieces of equipment and 26 out of 48 vehicles have been delivered to the county.

FCC said it is confident that all necessary materials will arrive at its newly established Green Cove Springs facility by the commencement date.

The company said that if any trucks are delivered late, they will implement a contingency plan, which includes using rental trucks currently in Florida and spare trucks from other Florida sites.

The commissioners made note of their concerns during the meeting.

District 4 commissioner Betsy Condon said her issue stems from her district's confusing trash pickup days. With her constituents having a pickup every day of the week, she said this would lead to problems with most people needing to remember to put their trash out for the first few weeks.

District 5 commissioner Kristen Burke also asked how the outcome would differ from St. John’s County, which ultimately decided to terminate its agreement with the company.

FCC said that since then, all of their equipment has been fully and properly activated, resulting in fewer hiccups and a better run in Clay.

100,000 overflow stickers were also delivered to the county ahead of the start date. Residents can purchase them at all five county libraries, Rosemary Hill Landfill, Hagan Ace Hardware and the FCC facility.
