FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lucretia Miller Elected President of Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME)

Orange Park, FL - Lucretia Miller, Librarian and Information Specialist at St. Johns Country Day School, was recently elected as the president of the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) and installed at the 43rd Annual FAME Conference held in Orlando.

FAME was established in 1973 when the Florida associations of School Librarians, Educational Television, and the Audiovisual Association merged. Responsibilities of the president include representing and advocating for over 4,000 school librarians in Florida as well as encouraging every student in Florida to be involved in and have open access to quality school library media programs administered by certified library media specialists.

FAME sponsors the annual Jim Harbin Student Media Festival that encourages students to communicate through media production and recognizes and rewards outstanding presentations of these activities. FAME also supports a variety of programs for students including the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards; Florida Teens Read; the Amanda Award, which rewards programs that aid in the well-being of teenagers; and the Intellectual Freedom Scholarship.

“I am proud to serve as the leader for FAME during this time of increasing recognition of the importance of school libraries. New research continues to show that student achievement is greatly increased when a school has a well-funded school library managed by a certified school librarian. The school librarian is not only a reading specialist, but responsible for ensuring that our students are future-ready with information fluency and problem-solving skills necessary for higher education or a career.”

Mrs. Miller has served as a school librarian in Duval County for twelve years prior to her placement at St. Johns Country Day School. She was Duval County’s Teacher of the Year, the only school librarian to achieve this award, and was a semifinalist for Florida Teacher of the Year. She has served on Northeast Florida Library Information Network (NEFLIN) Continuing Education committee, and currently is one of nine librarians in the nation on the Digital Public Library of America’s Curation Corp for the Open eBook initiative to give free open access to thousands of eBooks for Title-1 students and families. Mrs. Miller received her undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary, and her Masters of Science in Library and Information Studies from Florida State University.
