BCC disagrees on extra garbage carts amid FCC controversy

GREEN COVE SPRINGS — Despite news that St. Johns County has terminated its curbside collection agreement with FCC, the Board of County Commissioners is still proceeding with its contract.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the board voted to amend its agreement and redefine a 'Lawn and Leaf Bag' to include plastic bags in addition to the paper bag and receptacle that is currently allowed.

The bags must be 40 gallons and no larger than 50 pounds.

However, the board disagreed on the use agreement for residents who need to purchase extra garbage cans.

According to the resolution, for a one-time, non-refundable fee, each 65-gallon cart will cost an additional $61, and each 95-gallon cart will cost an additional $66.

An annual disposal fee of $5.11 per month would also be charged for the fiscal years 2024 through 2025.

Additionally, the county is set to administer special services for the extra cart, and each household is to sign a use agreement with the county to adhere to the required monthly payments.

District 2 Commissioner Alexandra Compere expressed concern about the county's role as a buffer between FCC and its customers in light of their recent issues.

Additionally, board members voiced concerns about residents who may miss payments due to difficult circumstances and how the agreement could affect them.

Due to the lack of a clear conclusion on the matter, the board decided to reconvene on the resolution at a later date.

In other news, the BCC officially approved renaming the Green Cove Springs Bypass to Clay Dairy Parkway.

The vote comes following a vetting and voting process on many names. Some name ideas included the Henry Clay Parkway, Jeremy McKay Parkway, Magnolia Springs Parkway and Augusta Savage Parkway.
