FLEMING ISLAND — As of now, construction for the new two-lane roadway on Radar Road has yet to commence, however the county has begun preliminary utility relocation to prepare for the project's start date.
The approximately $7 million project will connect U.S. 17 to Town Center Boulevard, adding the new roadway to an extension at the current traffic circle. The roadway will also include bike lanes, curbs and gutters, and drainage features.
The county introduced the project to residents early last year, sparking some debate regarding safety concerns, particularly with pedestrians in the area during and after construction.
As of Jan. 13, the county's Capital Projects team said the utility relocation is nearly complete, with Clay Electric poles moved out of the new roadway. Other utilities, they said, will shift overhead lines to the new poles in the coming weeks.
Although there is no official start date, the project contract is in its final stages, and the county will have a pre-construction meeting on Jan. 26.
