• A $124.4 million construction project to improve the Buchman Bridge starts.
• Middleburg’s Gary Rhodes, 23, is one of four soldiers killed when their helicopter crashed at Wiesbaden Air Base in Germany.
• Theives at Camp Blanding steal $12,000 worth of tickets for a concert featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Travis Tritt, Charlie Daniels, The Kentucky Headhunters and Wet Willie to benefit Ronnie Van Zant Park.

40 years ago, 1983
• Three men stationed at Cecil Field following a police chase and break-in at Orange Park High.
• The BCC agrees with Director of County Civil Defense Jim Corbin to break up the Doctors Inlet Volunteer Fire Department.
• The Orange Park Mall donates $500 to the Clay County Science Fair.
