MIDDLEBURG – A woman was transported back from the Probation Detention Center in Effingham County, Georgia, to Clay County to face charges of grand theft auto, burglary, dealing in stolen property and giving false information to a pawn broker.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s office, Amber Loraine Smith, 23, now of Springhill, is accused of moving out of a camper on Sept. 23, 2023, after she and another man were asked to leave the property. A man living inside the house made a video recording of his bedroom before going to work, and when he returned, he realized his Xbox and accessories were missing. CCSO later recovered the Xbox, two controllers and an external game card at a nearby pawn shop.

CCSO said Smith and the man went to A1 Pick A Part on Joe Johns Road on Oct. 3, 2023, and asked a mechanic to remove the GPS unit. When the mechanic realized it was a rental car, he stopped working. The next day, a Dodge truck was reported missing, and surveillance video showed Smith getting into the truck’s passenger side.

Smith, whose bond is $95,012, will return to court on July 29.
