GREEN COVE SPRINGS - With sophomore quarterback Landon Martin behind center, the Clay High Blue Devils football team scored their first win of the season with a rugged 23-20 win over Yulee on August 30 in Green Cove Springs. Clay improves to 1-1. Yulee falls to 0-2.
Martin, who had been in competition with Landon Chadwick for the position, got his first start and answered with three touchdown passes; two to Antonio Thomas and one to Daylen Brown to get the fourth-quarter comeback win over Yulee.
Martin had a fourth and four 20-yard pass to the corner of the end zone to Thomas, who got behind two Yulee defenders, in the first half before the Clay defense picked up a Yulee fumble at midfield with the score 10-0 to head to the end zone a second time.
After Yulee battled back to take a 13-10 lead in the second quarter, Martin found Thomas alone on the sideline for a 38-yard scoring pass and run that gave Clay the lead at 16-13. Martin's second scoring strike was on a fourth-and-eight situation for the Blue Devils.
In the third period, after an 18-yard pass to the Yulee 17, Martin hit Brown in the end zone for his third scoring pass to give Clay a 23-13 lead.
In the fourth, running back Lavaris Roberts kept the chains moving to seal the win with a 20-yard gallop to the Yulee 20.
Thomas finished with eight catches for 108 yards and two scores with Brown catching two for 26 with the one score. Martin finished with 146 yards passing.
Clay piled up 284 total yards with 138 yards on the ground.
