GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A 34-year-old man was arrested following a chase and run-ins with Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies that ended more than two hours later with him being Tasered on Sept. 8.
William Baird Tanner Woods, of Green Cove Springs, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery on a deputy, two counts of aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, resisting a deputy with violence, burglary and resisting arrest after CCSO was called to a bunk house near State Road 16 when two men returned from dinner and noticed two other men and a women breaking into their bunkhouse.
As they approached, all three fled in a truck and were followed by the two men. As they drove onto the old Gustafson Dairy Farm, they said Woods had left the lead truck, and the man and woman continued to drive away. Eventually, they backed up and ran into the two chasing them.
Deputies used two K-9 deputies and a drone to search for Woods. He eventually was spotted riding an ATV, and when CCSO attempted to stop him, he drove at them. According to CCSO, the deputy “was forced to veer from the designated travel path to avoid colliding with the defendant. " Woods then circled back and struck a deputy’s leg with his rear tire.
When CCSO attempted to make a traffic stop on Ranch Land Trail, Woods lost control, struck a CCSO squad car and “overturned several times.” Woods was thrown clear, and he escaped into the woods.
The sheriff’s office used K-9s and a drone again to locate him, but they finally found him when they heard some movement in palmetto bushes. When they approached him, he tried to escape by kicking the legs of a deputy before they gained control by Tasing him.
Deputies also learned he had an outstanding warrant in Clay County for attempting to elude law enforcement on July 11 while riding an ATV on CR 16A and Sikes Road.
Woods’ bond was set at $265,017. He’s due back in court on Oct. 7.
