TALLAHASSEE - The Daytona State women's cross country team took home the team and individual titles at the Region 8 Championships on Tuesday. The Falcons scored 25 points to Pasco Hernando's 51. Eight teams competed in the event and the Falcons pulled out the win for the second time in program history.
The first three finishers in the Region 8 Division 2 race were all Falcons. Giovana Meade took home the individual title with a time of 18:46. Shannon Jones was second with a time of 19:16, and Lauren Schaudel, running a strong race, crossed the line at 20:27, 91 seconds faster than her time on the course just one month ago.
Schaudel is a freshman at Fleming Island High School.
The Falcons took home another All-Region slot with Molly Burt finishing in seventh overall with a time of 21:02, just one second ahead of the 8th-place person.
Burt, a sophomore, is a Middleburg High graduate.
The top seven earn All-Region. "We knew we had to break up Pasco Hernando's pack, and the real difference today was having Lauren and Molly come through for us. They ran really solid races," commented Coach Judy Wilson.
Rounding out the top five for the Falcons was freshman Brooke Gerrits, placing 12th overall with a time of 21:25. The top five in cross country score for the team, and sixth and seventh are displacers. Jonna-Marie Kirk was 6th for the Falcons, and Trinity Trett was seventh with a 22:25. Two more Falcons finished in the top 30 of the 70-person field. Alexis Mills placed 28th with a time of 22:56 and Kaitlyn Harding placed 29th with a time of 23:04.
Also in the fields (8K for men, 5K for women), Florida State College-Jacksonville had Clay County runners Logan Moore of Middleburg (21st in 29:14.50), Christian Mayfield of Orange Park (28th in 30:15.30) and Julio Rodriguez of Ridgeview (did not start, sickness) for the men's team with Middleburg's Kayleigh McWatters for the girls team (11th in 21:18.20). FSCJ finished fifth in women's scores and third for the men's scores.
