GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested on Sunday, Nov. 1, after other deputies responded to a family disturbance that “became physical.”
Claude Hurley was charged with two counts of simple domestic violence after CCSO said Hurley may have been intoxicated when he grabbed food another family member and threw it across the room before he shoved the victim several times as they tried to leave. Recorded video footage confirmed the confrontation and showed Hurley yelling in an angered state. Another family member tried to intervene, but that member was pushed, too.
According to a release from the sheriff’s office, neither family members were injured.
Hurley was interviewed, and he ultimately was arrested. He was placed on administrative leave.
His bond was set at $2,004. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 30.
Also included in the release was the following statement:
“Acts of domestic violence are unacceptable and will not be tolerated – especially when committed by an individual entrusted to wear our badge. The badge we wear demands the highest level of responsibility and integrity. These actions fall short of that standard, and we will not shy away from transparency and accountability. We strongly encourage anyone experiencing domestic violence to seek help and support by contacting the Clay County Sheriff’s Office using 9-1-1 or our non-emergency line at (904) 264-6512, or you can submit a tip for our deputies to follow up using our SaferWatch app. You can also call Quigley House at (904) 284-0061.”
