"Why is there a left-turn lane on southbound U.S. Highway 17 at East-West Parkway? There is no roadway there. It is only a short distance from the busy, annoying County Road 220 intersection. The construction on U.S. 17 has been a bother for all travelers on that roadway."

FLEMING ISLAND — To answer this resident's question, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began its resurfacing and milling work on U.S. 17 from Water Oak Lane to Eagle Harbor Parkway back in late 2023.

The left turn lane was added as a part of FDOT's intersection improvements on U.S. 17.

These include:

  • Widening and adding a second left turn lane from U.S. 17 northbound to East-West Parkway westbound, also adding a crosswalk and pedestrian signage improvements.
  • Installing pedestrian safety and median sign improvements from Water Oak Lane to Village Square Parkway.
  • Widening and extending left and right turn lanes on U.S. 17 southbound at Eagle Harbor Parkway and adding a fourth travel lane for through traffic on southbound U.S. 17.
  • Adding a second travel lane for through traffic on westbound Bald Eagle Road to County Road 220, installing sidewalk and crosswalk improvements, and adding a median island and two right-turn slip lanes from U.S. 17 southbound to County Road 220 westbound

The $13.3 million project is scheduled for completion by fall 2025.
