Why did the county stop recycling?

Posted

The county's curbside recycling service ended last October, the same day that the FCC Environmental Services contract officially began.

A majority vote by the Board of County Commissioners ultimately omitted the service from the new agreement.

According to the county, the removal of the service has to do with high costs. Back in 2023, GEL Corp (the county's original processor) raised the processing fee from $6 a ton to $85 a ton.

That new price would've increased the residents' costs then and over the potential 10-year contract.

The county said that the fate of recycling was discussed in many Board of County Commissioner meetings, with commissioners noting that even if only a third of residents actually recycle, everyone would have to pay for it.

The service may not be entirely out of the cards, as the current FCC contract allows them to restart curbside recycling with a one-year notice.

Currently, residents can drop off only clean, flat, corrugated cardboard at any of the Environmental Convenience Centers: Clay Hill, Doctor's Inlet, Keystone Heights and Long Bay. You can also drop off at Rosemary Hill.
