GREEN COVE SPRINGS - With 20 wrestlers in the finals the Wilkinson Junior High wrestling team banked on numbers to an overwhelming Clay County title on Saturday at Green Cove Springs Junior High School.

“We always want the individual titles, but team titles come with numbers,” said Wilkinson coach Chuck Gerber. “Our program has exploded the past few years with so many kids coming out for the team, we have had a lot of Wilkinson vs. Wilkinson in the final matches.”

Wilkinson’s numbers delivered with a 353.5 point total above Green Cove’s 255 as runnerup and 254 for third place Lake Asbury in a fist-fight for the silver medal.

Oakleaf was third at 140, Lakeside fifth at 125.5 and Orange Park sixth at 88.5.

Wilkinson got their first champion as 80 with Bentley Williams holding off a late charge from Lake Asbury’s Wyatt Hickox to win 7-4.

Two more Wilkinson wins were added to Williams’ momentum with Grayson Saucer beating Oakleaf’s Braden Davis 5-2 in another thriller before Dyllan Kennedy pinned Orange Park’s East Carroll at 90 in just 48 seconds.

In the second fastest pin of the finals, Wilkinson’s Gavin Fisher popped Riley Caseja of Lake Asbury in 27 seconds.

Green Cove’s first champion came from Jaxson Linn at 106 with a 12-7 win over Nathan Harvey of Wilkinson

Lake Asbury got their first champion at 120 with Christian Mann pinning Curtis White of Wilkinson in 2:06.

Oakleaf got their first champion at 113 with Emmett Egger pinning Calvin Wells of Green Cove in 4:36.

Lakeside got their champion at 220 with Jay Shawn MCcloud pinning Wilkinson’s Aiden Thompson in just 23 seconds for the fastest pin of the day.

Teams will travel to Lake City for the Northeast Florida Athletic Conference championships on Saturday.
