Week 8 of the high school football season featured as much lightning and rain as running and tackling.
Two games – Oakleaf at Ocala Forest and Clay at Fleming Island – were postponed by the threatening weather associated with Hurricane Isaias’s landfall in the Florida Panhandle.
Oakleaf’s kickoff at Ocala Forest was washed back to a 6 p.m. start on Monday, Oct. 12, while Clay’s game at Fleming Island was called off during the game by lightning. The schools still must work out whether it will be resumed on Nov. 3 or Nov. 4.
Middleburg (5-2) and Orange Park (3-4) played despite the poor conditions, with the homestanding Broncos holding on for a 15-13 victory.
Meanwhile, two other county teams were swamped – literally and figuratively – on Friday night.
Dixie County (5-2) traveled to Keystone Heights (2-6) and sprinted out to a 43-7 halftime lead. The Bears then coasted to a 50-14 win.
Then, Ridgeview (1-6) lost 55-0 at home to 7-0 St. Augustine.
This week, Keystone Heights goes to Paxon in a Sunshine State-Atlantic North Region game, Fleming Island will host Middleburg in a Region 1-4A game, Ridgeview will play at Clay in a non-district tilt, Oakleaf will entertain Matanzas in a Region 1-6A game and St. Augustine will be at Orange Park in a non-district game.
