FLEMING ISLAND - Two goal line stands by Clay High kept Fleming Island out of the end zone in a quick quarter-and-a-half Tuesday night, as the Blue Devils answered any questions about their defense in a 25-18 final regular season victory.
"The team played well again with the defense making big stops," said Clay coach Jeff Gierke, who finished his second season by reversing a 208 record in 2025 to 8-2 this year. "I think we are going to the seventh seed going into the region playoffs. We have to see how the Rickards-Leon game goes [on Nov. 4]. Tonight was just to finish the game. Now, we wait."
The quarter-and-a-half was the resumption of the Oct. 9 game that was suspended by threatening weather.
Clay restarted at the Golden Eagles' 6-yard line at 7:44 and quickly it punched in for a touchdown with quarterback Wyatt Rapoza blasting through the line to put the Blue Devils up, 18-6.
Fleming Island running back Brady Digman did what he could to get the Eagles rolling with a rugged 25-yard run to the Clay 16, but the Blue Devils defense stiffened when Digman was stopped by linebacker Donnie Ford at the two. Fleming Island then missed a short field goal.
The Golden Eagles then recovered an errant punt snap by Clay for a safety. A highlight reel 70-yard punt return touchdown by Chase Donaldson that was negated by a penalty flag.
Two 15-yard flags against Clay, and two passes from Fleming Island quarterback Greyson Critch - 15 yards to Ryan Siliac and 28 yards to Gavin Boysen - put the Eagles inside the five. Ford snared Zion Longmire, Davis crashed Digman's advance and safety Matt Jones smashed Critch at the one to end the threat.
Clay worked the length of the field ahead of a touchdown plunge from fullback Kade Williamson to end the game.
In the second Tuesday night resumption, Middleburg turned a 15-13 Orange Park lead into a 29-13 victory.
