FLEMING ISLAND - With most teams facing just one or two more regular season matches, the volleyball scenario will feature plenty of local rivalry games to determine region playoff spots.
In district 3-5A, Middleburg and Gainesville are the top two teams that also feature strong teams like Clay, Orange Park, Ridgeview and Oakleaf.
Gainesville, a Final Four finisher last year, and Middleburg are both unbeaten at 2-0 in district play. Both have had rigorous schedules, with the 13-10 Broncos recently returning from a second tough tournament at Venice High School. They came away with two wins and three losses to powerhouses Merritt Island, Winter Park and DME Academy out of Daytona Beach.
Middleburg coach Meredith Forkum doesn't avoid tough schedules. Her biggest coup for the season has been two wins over two-time defending 5A champion Chiles - one the road and in the Carrie Prewitt gym.
Ridgeview, Oakleaf and Clay will be underdogs to unseat either Middleburg or Gainesville in district play. All three have improved drastically as the season progressed.
Gainesville, 12-11, also played tough opponents. It defeated Ridgeview, 3-0, last week and will face off with Santa Fe (18-3) and Buchholz to end its season.
For Fleming Island (17-3), now in district 4-4A, the road to regions looks to be headed to Bishop Kenny for coach Amy Yoder. Kenny (10-13) is still ranked ninth in Class 4A. The Golden Eagles have played a handful of top-tiered opponents, and only trails top-ranked Bishop Moore.
Fleming Island power front four of Lillie Eason, Lauren Brosky, Kaylee Clark and Zahaviah Sanders, finished with Creekside, Keystone Heights and Tocoi Creek.
In district 4-3A, Keystone Heights has a win over 18-3 Newberry which sits at No. 2 behind 9-8 Bradford County, which is 3-0 in district play, including a win against Keystone Heights.
Indians coach Kaitlyn Walker has a solid 14-8 squad. Mistakes were an Achilles Heel in recent 3-2 loss to Bradford County. Santa Fe (18-3) in district 4-3A, is the probable top target for region play.
St. Johns Country Day School, in district 2-1A at 9-5, has had a light schedule with less games and just two remaining against Clay and Ridgeview.
