CLAY COUNTY – Whether you favor crunchy or creamy, the challenge is on. The annual University of Florida Peanut Butter Challenge that is.
Launched in 2012 in Florida’s Panhandle region to raise awareness of peanut farming in the area, the challenge has grown into a friendly competition to help fight hunger in our state. UF/IFAS Extension offices in counties across the state invite people to donate jars of peanut butter, with the office collecting the most crowned champion and the peanut butter donated to local organizations to distribute to those in need. This year’s challenge runs through Oct. 31.
Why peanut butter? It’s nutrient-dense, which means it packs a lot of nutrients for the number of calories. It’s shelf-stable, so it will hold in a pantry or cupboard. And, of course, it’s loved by many (though the debate over crunchy versus creamy rolls on).
Food insecurity—the lack of financial resources or access to food within a household—can lead to an array of negative health outcomes. Many children and their families go hungry each day. So, spread the word: the challenge is simple and has far-reaching outcomes.
Please stop by the Clay County Extension Office adjacent to the Clay County Fairgrounds to drop off unopened, unexpired jars of peanut butter. You’ll find a collection box will be in the lobby. Or look to donate when you attend an Extension class or event; bring a jar to donate.
