Oakleaf, Fleming Island rock week one

OAKLEAF - Week two of the area high school football will be revved up for a September 15 clash between Fleming Island and Oakleaf high schools with both programs entertaining high-scoring wins in their season openers.

For Oakleaf, first-year coach Chris Foy blasted Orange Park 42-0 behind senior quarterback Brandon Wallace, Jr., debut night of five touchdowns accounted for; three via air, two on the ground.

“This is the first year he has had significant reps, and he is getting better and better,” said Foy. “He is an incredible athlete.”

For Fleming Island, an opportunistic defensive front was more than enough for visiting Clay High in the rivalry game that ended 40-20 for the Golden Eagles.

As of this writing, Fleming Island was still in negotiations to find game two and game three for their schedule with Rickards and Tampa Catholic both backing out of games against Fleming Island rather abruptly.

"We may get lucky with the storm if teams south of us cancel because of the storm," said Fleming Island first-year coach Chad Parker, who got an explosive defensive effort from junior Nathan Van Hof with a monstrous sack that led to a 37-yard scoring strike from quarterback Cibastian Broughton to wideout Trace Burney on the Golden Eagles first play after the fumble in the second half. "I don't mind too much about getting the team some rest before getting ready for Oakleaf in two weeks."

On offense, Parker got four touches from linebacker/running back Dehmir Jackson. Still, the burly backer rumbled for 62 yards on the ground while also taking the third-quarter kickoff 60 yards to the Clay 10 where Fleming Island scored on their first play of the second half to spark a chaotic scoring frenzy between both teams. Jackson also trucked a 12-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Parker understands the effects of time off the field for elite players and would like to see a game in those openings. Early talks with Satellite High (0-1, lost 40-0 to Heritage) are ongoing, per athletic director Travis Cunningham. Satellite finished 5-6 last year with a region playoff loss, 13-12 to Rockledge. Rockledge eventually lost in that region 3-3S semifinal 16-14 to eventual state runner up Daytona Beach Mainland.

Oakleaf's schedule gets no easier before Fleming Island with a visit from Baker County who lost a 12-0 game to Bradford County in a clash of north Florida power programs. Bradford scored a touchdown in quarters one (kickoff return for TD) and two (50 Yd scoring pass) then held off the Wildcats for the win. With their BYE the week before Fleming Island, Oakleaf gets a look at Bradford on October 6.

Out at Hawthorne High, the 2M two-time state champion, Middleburg, with a second interception from Vondarius Lane in the first quarter, got burned with big plays (45 Yd scoring pass then 70-yard scoring pass) and gave up a quick 14-0 lead in the first half.

Middleburg did answer with quarterback Carson Stewart working a 10-yard scoring pass to Jarren Rosier to put a little momentum into the Bronco halftime locker room.

In the third, Hawthorne blasted an 80-yard scoring run to go up 20-7 with Middleburg's defense punching out a fumble recovery just before the end of the third.

The Broncos battled series back and forth before Hawthorne struck again with a 70-yard scoring pass for the final score.

Middleburg hosts Bishop Kenny (1-0, 38-20 win over First Coast) in a rematch of last year's Crusaders win.

Kenny scored quickly and early; back-to-back 30-plus yard TD passes, with a 31-8 lead at the half then cruised to the 38-20 win. Kenny quarterback James Resar hit four scoring passes and ran one in from 21 yards away.

Orange Park, 42-0 loss to Oakleaf, will need to find an answer with the Raiders headed to Episcopal (1-0, 28-26 over Zarephath Academy) for game two. Episcopal led just 3-0 at the half, but both offenses exploded in the second half with Zarephath scoring 20 in the third and Episcopal scoring 15 in the fourth.

Keystone Heights had the Friday off after a solid preseason outing against Ridgeview and returns to play against Eastside High, 1-0, 28-9 over 2M-Inlet Grove out of Riviera Beach (7-3 last year). Inlet Grove, who returns starting quarterback, lost in region quarterfinals to eventual 2M runner-up American Heritage.

Eastside, 8-3 last year with a region playoff loss to Bradford, exploded for 21 second quarter points against Inlet Grove.

Ridgeview was scoreless for first three quarters despite moving the ball into the Menendez red zone, but fell 34-8. Panther senior running back Rayhn Hutchinson had a handful of 10-20-yard scampers with a midfield cruise that almost broke. Wideout Deshun Green caught a wide-open 30-yard catch and run post pattern from quarterback Travon Malone for the Panthers' score.

Ridgeview gets Clay at home and will need to get scores. Clay, with newcomer Geno Addison, a transfer running back from Bradford, zigzagging for 90 yards and a score against Fleming Island, moved the ball against Fleming Island at times with questionable penalties hampering the Blue Devils.

On their initial drive after receiving the opening kickoff, junior quarterback Merrick Rapoza, who throughout the game moved the ball with his own rumbles from the pocket plus quick strikes to wide-out Payton Dykas, got the Blue Devils deep into Fleming Island territory numerous times, but penalties and Fleming Island's defensive, under the direction of defensive coach Derek Chipoletti, was able to thwart the attempts.

Clay's scores came off a timely onside kick recovery and an ill-timed unsportsmanlike penalty on Fleming Island that kept a scoring drive going.
