FLEMING ISLAND - At Thursday's school board meeting, three elementary schools were recognized for their top fundraising efforts.
Thunderbolt, Orange Park and Oakleaf Village Elementary raised more than $50,000 for last year’s Kids Heart Challenge.
The program aims to raise awareness and fight heart disease and stroke through the American Heart Association. Students, or "heart heroes," can meet children with special hearts and raise money for the cause.
The program also promotes being active with fun activities while learning to keep their heart and brains feeling great, providing resources such as anti-vaping and anti-tobacco campaigns.
Teachers are also provided with resources for staff well-being.
Thunderbolt was the top fundraiser in the district with $25,412. Orange Park and Oakleaf Village followed with $14,639 and $10,155 respectively.
At the meeting, each school received a certificate of appreciation. The schools will participate again this year, and around 30 additional schools have registered to do so.
