• A 75-year-old man, Noel Johnson, was arrested after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said he held up the Bank of America branch near the Orange Park Mall. • Green Cove Springs Councilman Mitch Timberlake’s proposal to raise the city’s millage rate from 3.6 to 4.2763 is voted down, 3-2.

• Eleven Pace Center for Girls students attend a four-day educational “boot camp” at St. Johns River State College to prepare them for college.

• Jacksonville’s Derrell Paul Emergy is found guilty of first- and second-degree murder and burglary during a robbery at an Oakleaf Plantation condominium.

• The Clay County Schools District must send a letter to the state to explain how it plans to improve its financial picture after it said it would struggle to keep pace with rising costs.

• The County Commission approves a re-zoning request allowing The Ravines to create a new development and return amenities.

• County Commission Chairman Larry Lancaster wants to discuss the possibility of creating a public service or utility tax on the retail sale of electricity.

• The Green Cove Springs and Clay County fire rescue departments merge.

• Construction is wrapping up on the Thrasher-Horne Center, which allows the concert and conference hall to schedule events.

• Gregory Dale Donaldson was 20 when he was arrested for stalking, conspiracy to commit murder, burglary, and solicitation to murder after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office learned he had been stalking at least 20 women and wrote messages saying he would kill and eat them.

• Tony Mathison’s termination as the football coach at Clay High is upheld after he suspended seven players for drinking alcohol at a party.

40 years ago, 1983

• A resolution commemorating the Clay High girls’ softball team’s state championship was presented to the school’s athletics director, John Martin, by city mayor George Killian.

• The Clay County Personnel Committee to start interviewing candidates for the County Administrator’s job.
