• Former Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles visited Clay County as part of an ongoing plan to spend more time in the community. Chiles received the key to the city at a meeting at the Orange Park Town Hall.

• Jacksonville’s James Lanier died after being hit by a train crossing County Road 315 in Green Cove Springs. According to witnesses, he tried to outrun the train at the crossing by running around the crossing arms.

• The BCC selects Bob Wilson as its new county manager.

40 years ago, 1983

• South Atlantic Financial Corporation tells homeowners in the Heritage Farms neighborhood it plans to send a crew to clean undeveloped lots.
• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said it won’t go along with other county employees who agreed to a five-and-a-half percent pay increase.

• The county learns it could cost $103,000 to make renovations at the Clay County Jail to comply with the state fire marshal’s office demands.
