• The Green Cove Springs City Council merged its planning review, inspection services and a building official under the same roof via a private contractor to better handle the city’s growth.

10 years ago, 2014

• Pace Center for Girls announced plans to open a nonprofit school on College Drive in Orange Park in January.

• Nature students from St. Johns River State College’s Orange Park campus collected trash along a three-mile stretch of the St. Johns River.

• Erica Cole is crowned Homecoming Queen at Middleburg High. The school’s football team also won a pivotal football game against Jacksonville Englewood.

20 years ago, 2004

• Orange Park Fire Rescue paramedic Frank Moorefield confessed to tampering and removing morphine from the department. The Orange Park Police Department charged him with three counts of possession of a controlled substance and petit theft.

• Clay County Sheriff Scott Lancaster said the county’s first Peace Breakfast was a success in remembering victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

• The Clay County District Schools wrestled with how to pay for one school under construction and two others that needed to be built with new residents moving into the county.

30 years ago, 1994

• Assistant State Attorney Tim Collins told the owners of lingerie shops they were operating illegally after the owners of Pretty Lady Lingerie on Parkwood Avenue were sentenced to one year of probation for racketeering.

• Former M*A*S*H star Mike Farrell spoke at the Quigley House “Every Woman Can … Live Without Fear” campaign kickoff dinner to raise awareness about domestic violence.

• Emman Tolmachjova and Galina Potopova – dentists from Russia – shadowed Orange Park dentist Peter McLeod as part of a program with Sister Cities International in hopes of going back to their country and sharing what they learned.

40 years ago, 1984

• Carl Elbert Mosley went on trial for two counts of second-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of carrying a firearm for the deaths of Frederick B. Hendrickson and George Dyson and injuring Randy Darwin Page on March 24, 1984.

• Federal Judge Susan Black released Clay County Board of Commissioners from a discrimination lawsuit filed by Martha Kelley against her former employer, L.H. “Lanny” Lancaster, Clay County Supervisor of Elections.

• A $20 million bond issue by the Clay County Finance Authority helped low-income families borrow home loans at 11.45% interest, points below the prevailing mortgage at the time.
