MIDDLEBURG – According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, two of their deputies were attacked by an outraged man when they tried to break up a fistfight on July 4 in the parking lot of a shopping center at the intersection of County Road 218 and State Road 21.

Edward James Rivenburg, 19, of Middleburg, was arrested and charged with two counts of battery on law enforcement officers, resisting arrest with violence and domestic violence after CCSO responded to a call about a fight.

When they arrived, Rivenburg refused to talk with deputies and he continued to “growl and breathe heavily while forming incoherent sentences,” according to the arrest report.” When deputies approached, he missed with a closed-fist punch at one deputy’s face. He also tried to punch the victim, a woman who is seven months pregnant in her face, but he missed.

According to the arrest report, deputies subdued Rivenburg, and while they were handcuffing him, he kicked one of the deputies in the leg while he continued “to shout incoherent statements.” Deputies had to carry Rivenburg to a squad car because he refused to walk, and in the process, he kicked one in the groin area. As he was being placed in a restraint inside the car, he kicked a deputy again.

Rivenburg, whose next court appearance will be on Aug. 6, has a bond of $130,011.
