JACKSONVILLE – The Rotary Club of Orange Park Sunrise Squad participated in the Carry Forward Wounded Warrior Project 5K run or walk on Nov. 4. The squad consisted of 10 members and exceeded their goal, raising $7,124 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Orange Park finished second out of 183 squads.

The Wounded Warrior Project is a nonprofit organization providing support and services to veterans and service members injured in the line of duty.

The Carry Forward 5K is an annual event that challenges participants to carry a flag, a weight, or another person for five kilometers, symbolizing the daily burdens that wounded warriors face.

Gordon Reynolds led the Rotary Club. Linda Reynolds, Duane Mallicoat, Dr. Douglas Reed, Jeremy Johnston, Sarah Cambell, Brianna Butcher, Daniel Leporati, James Mallicoat and Karen McMullen joined him. The squad members wore matching shirts and carried flags during the run.

“When we rally together for injured veterans, we help ensure warriors with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and physical injuries get the specific help they need – free of charge,” Gordon Reynolds said. “Every step we take and every dollar we raise helps provide services in mental health, career counseling and long-term rehabilitative care so that warriors can thrive in their next mission, whatever it may be.

“We are proud to support the Wounded Warrior Project and honor the sacrifices of our brave men and women in uniform,” Mallicoat said. “We had a lot of fun and camaraderie during the 5K, and we are grateful for the generous donations from our friends, family and community.”

The Carry Forward 5K had 1,909 participants. Along with corporate sponsorships, it raised $223,313.
