In case you didn’t notice, Clay County Public School students and teachers excel. In the last paragraph on an article regarding School Board news you would discover what should be front-page news.

With all that is inflicted on our public schools by our governor and the legislature by their various “you shall” and “you shall not” edicts, Clay County students excel, as they do yearly.

As a retired Clay County educator with 37 years of experience, I would sometimes hear folks say, “Kids today are not taught American History well at all and they don’t know Civics.”  Well, they do know Civics. Seventh graders were No. 1 in the state in Civics. Great job! At the high school level, American History came in No. 4. They indeed were taught and learned well.

With all the manufactured criticisms, our public schools face, it would do well to recognize and give thanks to all the people in the Clay Public Schools. They

could use a thank you.

In case you missed the article, here is the good news about our students’ performance in the state. In English Language Arts, sixth graders were No. 2 and 10th graders were No. 6. In Math, sixth graders were No. 3, (while) eighth graders were No. 5, and those taking Algebra One were third. In Science, fifth and eighth graders were both No. 6 in the state. And in Social Studies, seventh graders were tops at No. 1 in Civics, while high school American History they were No. 4.

That’s a lot of top-10 rankings.

As radio commentator Paul Harvey used to say, “Now you know the rest of the story.”
