Raiders up the ante for season

ORANGE PARK - Amidst a storm scare that caused two area games to be either postponed or canceled; Oakleaf and Middleburg, Orange Park took the limelight for the week with an astounding effort of fast-striking offense to take out a highly-touted Episcopal team with a 34-19 win Friday night.

Orange Park, after a season-opening 42-0 pasting by Oakleaf, unleashes against Episcopal with senior speed merchant Jermel Brown and wideout Jaden Paulk capturing strikes from quarterback Gabe Taylor to light up the Episcopal secondary with plays of 69 yards (Brown TD), 45 yards (Paulk) and 29 yards (Joshua Johnson run TD) to top off a two-touchdown rush effort from running back Joshua Johnson.

On defense, Orlando Jackson romped 70 yards to paydirt with a fumble to put the score at 27-10 in the third quarter. Jackson also had an interception.

With the Raiders to host Clay for game three, Raider coach Marcus Wimberly must bank on the Episcopal game plan to make the Clay game a thriller after the Blue Devils rebounded from their season-open loss to Fleming Island with a strong win over Ridgeview (See Mike Zima's story).

Clay showed off their own big play offense with a double quarterback system between Merrick Rapoza; a 40-yard run, and Landon Chadwick, two TD passes and  7-yard rush TD.

Clay did give up two big plays to Ridgeview running back Rayhn Hutchinson; 130 YDs, scores of 80 and 29 yds.

Ridgeview needs to find the sweet spot of offense and be more consistent with Hutchinson the main thrust now and quarterback Travon Malone hoisting a big arm and getting downfield, but the Panthers (0-2) not finding the end zone.

Gateway is also 0-2 with losses of 26-7 and 21-0 to Wesley Chapel and Lake Buena Vista.

For Fleming Island and Oakleaf, with a September 15 showdown looming and both teams taking BYE weeks, the preparations, on paper, should be a chess match of strategy with the time before the game.

Fleming Island got a quick remake game with a flex game 41-6 win (Broughton 70 YD TD run, Cruz Pick six) over North Florida Educational Institute in place of two cancels to Rickards and Tampa Catholic and coach Chad Parker got to avoid two weeks away from game time for his team.

Oakleaf was to play Baker County but that game got canceled Friday with no replacement game available.

Oakleaf rocked Orange Park, but Baker County could have been a look-see for coach Chris Foy on whether his team was hitting on eight cylinders in the 42-0 romp. Orange Park got their engines in order with a strong win over Episcopal so Foy has to wonder where his team is. Baker County was to be that barometer prior to Fleming Island.

Note: Oakleaf treks into a gauntlet few weeks with Bolles, Creekside, Bradford and Buchholz on the docket after Fleming Island.

For the Broncos, their game with Bishop Kenny was moved to October 20 due to weather, but Middleburg will host Bradford (2-0) in a doozy of a second test after Hawthorne.

Bradford pumped Baker County 12-0, then Baldwin 40-6 to open their season and looks to bring big offense to the 'Burg, plus a legit kick return dude who went 84 to the house against Baker. Bradford hit a 48-yard scoring pass and the Middleburg secondary got tattooed against Hawthorne.

Big plays hurt the Broncos, but they held their ground in between. Keep the defensive heads on a swivel.

Keystone Heights got smoked by an Eastside team filled with cheetahs and coach Steve Reynolds needs to right the ship to avoid a disaster first season. Basic Keystone Heights ball control might be the ticket. Fort White had a tough 19-13 win over Taylor County in their opener on August 26 and has been resting for a week.

If it's a battle on the trench, Fort White got three scores off 92 yards rushing from senior Dakota Fisher. Stop him priority one. Quarterback Jaden Jackson passed for 193 yards with just 10 passes, but no scores and bombs of 52 and 36. Eastside tested the Keystone Heights secondary big.
