OAKLEAF – Early Tuesday, after the first bell rang, students and staff at Oakleaf High were evacuated to the football stadium out of an abundance of caution due to an undetermined smell on campus. Clay County Fire and Rescue immediately responded to campus with their gas chromatographs and did not detect the presence of gas.
District maintenance staff were on scene and determined that the smell was from an old sewer trap. District maintenance have worked to rectify the situation and air scrubbers were brought into the campus to assist with the smell. At no time were students and staff in danger and at 9:15 a.m., students and staff were cleared to enter the building to resume the normal bell schedule.
The schools district said its No. 1 priority was safety, and it appreciate the patience and flexibility of our students, staff, and parents as it took the time to determine the campus was safe to re-open.
