Oakleaf elementary schools sweep FDOT bike lane awards

OAKLEAF – Not only did Clay County sweep the three grand prize-winning submissions in the Florida Department of Transportation’s annual Mobility Week’s Bike Lane Design Contest, but all three go to school in Oakleaf.

Ember Leveque, won the first- and second-grade competition, and Gisele Golston, won the third- and fourth-grade division, and both attend Oakleaf Village Elementary. Anastasia Riveria, who attends Discovery Oaks Elementary, won fifth- and sixth-grade classes.

All three created bike lane designs that promoted transit, pedestrian and bicycle safety. Their designs were imprinted into bike lanes on school properties near the school marquee last week.

More than 900 students created a design from Clay, Suwannee and Nassau counties, according to FDOT’s Chris Nalsen. Of those, more than 300 came from Clay.

Oakleaf Village also had six runner-up winners.

Our first-through-sixth graders worked on this contest during one art class as a follow-up to Bike and Walk to School Day,” said Oakleaf Village art teacher Michelle Levinson. “The designs were narrowed down and sent to Chris Nalsen from the FDOT, who narrowed them down again by a panel of judges. We are so excited to see their ideas and designs come to life and be able to see them in front of OVE for years to come. We are so proud of our Explorers.”
