With both Sam Craven and Harris Jammes traveling to Lakeland for the FHSAA Class 2A boys weightlifting state championships on Wednesday, May 6, the goal was medals and a possible state title.
That being said, in a tough bout of lifts, Craven, at 183 pounds, was top finisher for area lifters with a third-place finish in Traditional scoring (clean and jerk/bench press) while Jammes, in 129, was fifth in Olympics for a top local finish in that discipline (Olympic Snatch/Clean and Jerk).
"I had three solid lifts in the Olympics Snatch and hit a good one, 280, on my first in Clean and Jerk," said Craven. "The next two, I don't really know what happened but I missed. It wasn't a judging thing, just me not executing."
For Craven and Jammes, both district and region champs in both disciplines, the totals above them were impressive with Craven totaling 650 in Traditional with a 675 the top total.
"I hit a 25-pound personal best on bench press with a 370," said Craven. "I was 10 pounds, I think, to catch second place."
Jammes, in Olympics, totaled 370 with a 425 the top total.
"Top six is placing, so we both got team points," said Craven. "I don't know if we are satisfied because I thought I had higher numbers coming in."
Also scoring top 10 finishes were Austin Davis of Fleming Island with a seventh in 139 Traditional with a 455 total and Clay Unlimited Touni Saoud with a seventh place 640 total in Traditional.
In Olympics, Middleburg's Darius Swilley was eighth at 219 with a 500 total (610 tops) with Saoud eighth at Unlimited at 495 with a 615 total.
South Sumter won the Olympics team title with 28 points with Leesburg second at 16 and Suwannee third at 10.
In Traditional, in a close battle up top, Columbia was a 19-18 team title over Mosley with Port Charlotte third at 17.
Others who competed were Ridgeview's Wyatt Moore, Wyatt Hickox, Skyler Phoenix Dean , AJ Bivins and Ajax Sgrco of Clay, CJ Williams, Ashton Harp and Caiden Thigpen of Middleburg and Brady Digman of Fleming Island Phoenix-Dean had a hand injury during his Olympic Snatch.
