MIDDLEBURG – A traffic stop on May 29 led to the arrest of a couple – a man for riding a stolen motorcycle and a woman for trafficking methamphetamine.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy noticed Mark Lewis Mayerlen, 33, of Jacksonville, operating a motorcycle on Peppergrass Street without eye protection and without a license tag.

The deputy knew Mayerlen had no driver’s license, so he was detained. When asked about the motorcycle, the deputy said he “uttered” it probably was stolen. A check revealed it was reported stolen on May 18 in Clay County.

The passenger, Amanda Marie McHale, 33, of Middleburg, was wearing a backpack. Deputies uncovered a significant amount of methamphetamine in the backpack to warrant trafficking charges. In Florida, any amount exceeding 14 grams is considered trafficking.

McHale is being held without bond, while Mayerlen’s bond was set at $40,006.
