MIDDLEBURG – A man was arrested after a security officer at Walmart said she saw him leave the store without paying for three bags of grass seed and a box of Cinnamon French Toast Strips cereal.
Anthony Jerome Griffin, 42, of Orange Park, was charged with shoplifting, resisting law enforcement and resisting retail theft recovery on Aug. 16 after a loss prevention officer tried to stop him from leaving the store without paying for the items.
According to the arrest report, Griffin was asked to go to the security office, but he pushed his cart into the officer. He then tried to leave the store with the items.
Walmart called the Clay County Sheriff’s Office with a description. A deputy saw him and turned on his flashing lights. Griffin then removed his shirt and ran across Brannan Field Road toward The Home Depot. He later told deputies he didn’t hear their commands to stop because his hearing aids fell out. He also said he was running to use the restroom at The Home Depot and removed his shirt because it was hot.
Griffin was released from the Clay County Jail after posting a $5,006 bond.
