Annual event raises money, awareness ahead of state games on May 17-18
FLEMING ISLAND – Lawmen and firefighters traded their khaki uniforms for red T-shirts and compassion on Friday, May 3, for the rescheduled Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
While the 2.3-mile run raised money and awareness for the county’s Special Olympics team ahead of the Florida State Games at Walt Disney World on May 17-18, the biggest surprise came after the finish at the Plantation Sports Complex. Athlete and longtime volunteer Dianne McKittrick, who recently moved into an apartment, was given a washer, dryer and mattress by a community of fellow athletes and supporters for her countless hours of service to the organization. Her commitment to helping fellow Special Olympians was recognized in 2019 by the Paul and Klare Reinhold Foundation’s Celebrate Clay when she was selected as the Peggy Bryan Volunteer of the Year.
This year, members of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Rescue, Orange Park, and Green Cove police departments participated in the run.
