OAKLEAF - Oakleaf High first year head football coach Chris Foy was looking for the next guy up from his talented Knights lineup in Saturday's team scrimmage at Oakleaf High School.
"This is about finding the right guys to come in when our top guys need a break," said Foy, who takes over for departed Marcus Miller in 2023 who left after a season as interim head coach for Frank Garis. "We wanted to see which guys will step up when the lights are on them. We have a lot of good young freshmen and sophomores and today is the day to see what they can do."
Foy did have is massive offensive and defensive probable starters on the field; defensive end J.J. Marsh-Mensie and linebackers Neil Whyte and Dajon Brown, but senior quarterback Brandon Wallace, Jr., was not on the field (family trip) and junior running back Chris Foy II was on the sidelines with sophomore defensive back and wide receiver Denereo Jacobs, both top players for Foy.
"We know what they can do and they are talented enough to transition back into the lineup quickly," said Foy. "We want to find the guy who has been crashing practice and weightlifting and maybe gets to show off some football today."
With sophomore quarterback Jayvin Romero showing some pocket awareness with scrambles downfield, Foy got a good look at his pass protection detail and despite some fumbled snaps, the offense got a few downfield passes; one for a wide open score to wide to Kheinde May-Parker, but Foy kept the game in the middle of the field.
Marsh-Mensie got into the backfield on rushes including one hurry that caused a deflection in the end zone from a 10 yard first down start.
"He could have big season, he's that quick," said Foy, who had returner James Kitchens in the secondary at safety patrolling centerfield. "Kitchens stays healthy (injury last season), we are good in the secondary with Denereo and young guys like Jordin Pryce stepping up."
Foy gets his first game look on August 17 with Sandalwood (4M, 5-5 last year) and Baldwin (2S regions, 9-3 last year) coming to Oakleaf for preseason action then their rivalry opener with Orange Park.
